Help & FAQ
Everything Jabberhouse Notes can do, and how to do it. Click a question to open the answer. Can't find it? Email support@thatsmystuff.info.
Nothing matches that. Try a shorter word, like "tag" or "image".
Getting started
How do I make a new note?
Click the pencil at the top of the note list, or press Ctrl + Alt + N. A blank note opens and you can start typing right away.
If you're looking at a tag when you make the note, the new note gets that tag automatically.
Where do I type the title?
There's no separate title box. The first line of a note is its title. Whatever you type there is what shows in bold in the note list, and it's the name other notes use to link to it.
Do I need to save?
No. Notes save themselves a moment after you stop typing. The top right corner of the editor says Editing… while you type, then Saved.
If your connection drops, you'll see a message with a Retry button. Your words stay on screen until the save goes through.
What happens to a note I open but never type in?
An empty new note is thrown away as soon as you move to another note, so blank notes never pile up in your list.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. On a phone the list and the editor take turns filling the screen. Tap a note to open it, and tap the arrow at the top left to go back to the list.
Your tags, Trash and the other links live behind the menu button at the top left.
Organizing your notes
Can I rename or delete a tag everywhere at once?
Yes. Click Edit next to Tags in the sidebar. Each tag turns into a text box. Type a new name to rename it on every note, or click the × to remove it from every note. Your notes themselves aren't touched. Click Done when you're finished.
If you rename a tag to one that already exists, the two are merged into one.
How do I find a note?
Type in the search box above the note list. Results update as you type, and matching words are highlighted. Press Ctrl + Alt + F to jump to the search box.
To search inside one tag, type tag: and the tag name, for example tag:recipes. You can mix it with words: tag:recipes chicken finds chicken notes tagged recipes.
How do I keep a note at the top of the list?
Open the note and click the pin in the toolbar. Pinned notes always sit above everything else, and the pin turns solid green. Click it again to unpin.
Can I change the order of my pinned notes?
Yes. Every pinned note has a dotted handle on its right edge. Press and hold the handle, drag the note up or down, and let go. A green line shows where it will land. Press Esc mid-drag to cancel.
The order is saved, so it stays the same on every device. On a phone, drag the handle with your finger. A note you pin later goes to the top of the pinned group.
How many words is my note?
Click the info button in the toolbar. It shows the word count, the character count, when the note was created and when it was last changed.
How many characters is the part I highlighted?
Highlight any text in a note, with the mouse or with Shift and the arrow keys, and a small green counter appears at the top right of the editor, for example 42 characters · 8 words. Let go of the highlight and the counter disappears.
It's handy when you're writing something with a length limit, like a social media post. Emoji count as one character each, the same way most sites count them, so the number matches what the post box will tell you.
It works in the Markdown preview too, so you can highlight the finished text and count that. On a phone, the counter shows just the characters, to keep the toolbar tidy.
Formatting with Markdown
What is Markdown?
Markdown is a way to format text by typing a few symbols, with no bold button or font menu. You type plain text with markers, and the preview shows it formatted.
Turn it on for a note with the button. It's switched on per note, so your other notes stay plain.
I typed **bold** but it isn't bold. Why?
That's expected. While you type, the markers stay visible so you can edit them. To see the finished, formatted version, click the eye in the toolbar or press Ctrl + Alt + P. Do the same again to go back to typing.
The eye only appears once Markdown is turned on for that note.
Which Markdown markers can I use?
| Type this | To get |
|---|---|
# Heading | A big heading |
## Smaller heading | A smaller heading |
**bold** | bold |
*italic* | italic |
- item | A bullet point |
1. item | A numbered list |
> quote | An indented quote |
`code` | Typewriter text |
[words](https://example.com) | A link with your own words |
Links
How do I open a web link inside a note?
Any web address you type, starting with https:// or www., gets a thin underline. Hold Ctrl (⌘ on a Mac) and click it to open the page in a new tab. The pointer turns into a hand while you hold the key over a link.
A plain click without Ctrl just puts your cursor there, so you can still edit the address.
How do I link one note to another?
Type two square brackets, [[. A list of your note titles pops up. Keep typing to narrow it, use the arrow keys to choose, and press Enter or Tab. You'll get something like [[Friday stream]].
To follow the link, hold Ctrl (⌘ on a Mac) and click it. A Back button appears at the bottom for a few seconds to take you back where you were. In the Markdown preview, a plain click is enough.
Why is one of my note links underlined with dots?
A dotted underline means no note has that title yet. Ctrl + click it and a new note is created with that title already filled in. The underline turns solid once the note exists.
Links match a note's first line. If you change that first line, links pointing at the old title turn dotted until you update them.
Pictures
How do I add a picture or screenshot?
Copy the picture, click in your note and paste with Ctrl + V. You can also drag an image file from your computer onto the note. PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP pictures work.
While it uploads, the note shows a short Uploading image… line. When it's done, that line becomes the picture's address, and a small thumbnail appears in a strip under the note.
Big pictures are shrunk a little before uploading, so they fit within the site's size limit.
How do I see the picture full size?
Click its thumbnail in the strip under the note. To see pictures in place among your text, click the eye for the preview. Adding a picture turns Markdown on for that note automatically, so the preview is ready.
Can other people see my pictures?
No. Your pictures are stored privately, and only your signed-in account can load them. Even someone with the exact picture address just gets a "not found" page.
How do I remove a picture from a note?
Delete the line that starts with and a font. The typewriter font is easy on the eyes for scripts.
You can also choose light or dark appearance, and how your note list is ordered: last edited first, newest created first, or A to Z by title. Pinned notes always stay on top.
Your preferences follow your account, so they apply on every phone and computer you sign in from.
I left myself signed in on someone else's computer. What do I do?
On the Account page, click Sign out everywhere else. Every other device is signed out, and you stay signed in on the one you're using.
Are my notes backed up?
Yes. Each night the site saves a copy of all your notes, the Trash and your pictures, but only if something changed since the last copy. The newest five are kept, and older ones are removed as new ones arrive.
You'll find them in the Backups section of the Account page. Click Download next to any of them to get a zip file. Inside, every note is its own text file named after its first line, so you can open them on any computer without this site. Press Back up now to make one straight away, or Turn off if you'd rather not have nightly copies.
Can my backups go to Google Drive or Dropbox?
Yes, if the site has them switched on. In the Backups section of the Account page, click Connect next to Google Drive or Dropbox and say yes on the screen that opens. Your newest backup is sent right away, and every new one follows.
Google Drive keeps them in a folder called "Jabberhouse Notes backups". Dropbox keeps them in its Apps folder. The site can only see the backups it puts there, nothing else in your storage. The same five-copy limit applies there too, so your storage doesn't fill up.
Click Disconnect to stop. Backups already saved there stay yours.
How do I contact support?
Click Contact support at the bottom of the left sidebar (on a phone, it's behind the menu button ). Pick what it's about, write what happened, and add a screenshot if it helps. You can paste a screenshot straight onto the page. The answer comes to your email, so check the spam folder if it seems slow.
Can't sign in? Email support@thatsmystuff.info instead.
How do I delete my account?
At the bottom of the Account page, open I want to delete my account, type your email and password, and confirm. Your account, notes, tags, versions and pictures are deleted for good, and it can't be undone.
Want to keep a copy? Download a backup on the same page first. Backups already in your own Google Drive or Dropbox stay there.
How do I sign out?
Click Sign out at the bottom of the left sidebar. On a phone, it's behind the menu button . Signing out also cancels "Keep me signed in" on that device.
Is there a dark mode?
Yes. Click Toggle dark mode at the bottom of the sidebar, or choose Light, Dark or Match my device on the Account page. Your choice follows your account to every device. Until you choose, the site follows your device's own light or dark setting.
Can I download a copy of my notes?
Yes. Click Export notes at the bottom of the sidebar. You'll get one file with all your notes, their tags and dates. Notes in the Trash and pictures aren't included.
For a complete copy, including pictures and the Trash, download a backup from the Backups section of the Account page.
Who can read my notes?
Only you. Notes are tied to your account, and nobody else's account can open them. The site owner can see how many notes and pictures an account has and when it was last used, but never what's written in them.
What are the "Sponsored" boxes?
Those are ads from the site's sponsors. Clicking one opens the sponsor's page in a new tab and leaves your notes exactly where they were. Ads never see your notes.
